Black Forest Smoothie

Inspired by the German cake Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte, also known as Black Forest cake, this smoothie makes a perfect breakfast or post-workout meal, combining two of my favorite flavors- cherries and chocolate.


This smoothie is not only delicious, but also:

  • Great source of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory substances

  • Ideal for reducing soreness after heavy training

  • Great source of selenium (for thyroid health)

  • Rich in fiber, plant protein and omega-3s

  • Perfect for hormonal health


This black forest smoothie makes a great meal option during the follicular phase of the menstrual cycle. In this preovulatory phase, estrogen rises, which allows the uterine lining to thicken in order to host the egg that will be released during ovulation. A great way to support estrogen metabolism, especially in estrogen dominant or perimenopausal women, is to add phytoestrogen containing foods like flaxseed.


Another great nutrient for this phase of the menstrual cycle, found in pumpkin seeds and oats, is zinc. Studies have shown that zinc levels drop significantly during the luteal phase (the phase after ovulation) in women suffering from PMS (premenstrual syndrome), making replenishing zinc an important step in managing PMS symptoms. Zinc also has anti-inflammatory properties, contributing to having less menstrual cramps.


Along with the above mentioned nutrients, this smoothie also contains maca root, an adaptogenic herb, known for lowering cortisol and improving energy as well as supporting the reproductive system in both men and women.



BLACK FOREST SMOOTHIE

VEGAN, GLUTEN-FREE, PROTEIN-RICH

YIELD: 1 serving

INGREDIENTS:


For the cherry layer

  • 1 cup of frozen cherries

  • 1 tbsp of flaxseed

  • 1 tbsp of pumpkin seeds

  • 1 tsp of maca powder

  • 1/4 cup of rolled oats

  • 1 Brazil nut

  • 1/2 cup of cashew milk

  • 1 pitted medjool date

For the chocolate layer

  • 1 banana

  • 1 scoop of vanilla flavored plant protein

  • 1 tbsp of unsweetened cacao powder

  • 1/2 cup of cashew milk

  • 1 pitted medjool date

For the toppings

  • 1 tbsp of coconut yogurt

  • Couple of frozen or fresh cherries

  • Cacao nibs

  • Desiccated coconut


INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. In a high speed blender, mix together all of the ingredients for the cherry layer.

  2. Transfer to a glass jar.

  3. Repeat step one for the chocolate layer.

  4. Add the chocolate layer into the glass jar on top of the cherry layer.

  5. Garnish with coconut yogurt, cherries, cacao nibs and desiccated coconut.

  6. Grab a spoon or straw, and enjoy!
